University appeals for assistance

The University of Papua New Guinea has issued an appeal to the general public to assist first year students who lost their possessions in the fire on Friday night with cash and kind donations.

Vice chancellor Professor Albert Mellam issued the appeal on Saturday to the public to assist with stationary necessities for the business foundation year male students.

Director of public relations and events management James Robins said donations can be brought to the university’s public relations office which will be recorded and given to students.

“There will be receipts for everything that they donate,” Robins said.

Robins can be contacted on telephone 326 7257 or via email: jrobins@upng.ac.pg

Loop spoke to students who resided at the Talaigu hall of residence and was told some managed to get important documents from their rooms while others are left with what they wore that night.

Meanwhile, a team of experts will commence investigation into the Talaigu male hall of residence on Monday to establish a technical assessment of the structure.

This assessment will determine whether the damage from the fire has affected the framework of the building and whether or not it can be renovated once funding is available.
