Unified Football Competition ends

The Special Olympics Papua New Guinea (SOPNG) has successfully ended its Play Unified Football competition today in Port Moresby.

The competition ran for five months and saw 500 participants take part in ten teams from schools, organisations and villages.

These include Gabagaba Village, Cheshire Homes, Kalang Services, Red Cross and Hohola Demonstration School.

Unified football is a mixture of able body and people with intellectual disabilities.

SOPNG president Takale Tuna said the competition aims to drive the message of social inclusion.

Tuna explained that they want to drive the understanding and exception of people with intellectual disabilities to be accepted and be inclusive into the society.

He said the children have improved a lot in terms of skills over the past months as the sport became popular among the kids.

He confirmed that they’re now looking at including boxing, volleyball and handball into the competition.

However, Tuna said they’re faced with a shortage of volunteers therefore they are doing one sport at a time then will go from there.
