UN calls for independent inquiry into students’ shooting

The United Nations has welcomed the announcement by the Ombudsman Commission for launching an investigation into the incident at the University of Papua New Guinea.

In a statement, the UN said: “We are deeply concerned about the unrest in Papua New Guinea, and particularly the events of Wednesday, June 8, when police opened fire at student protestors who were preparing to march to Parliament in Port Moresby, injuring a number of students, some of whom remain hospitalised.

“We are aware that the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary’s Commissioner has announced an inquiry into the incident.

“It is important that the police inquiry examines the use of force by law enforcement officers, including the use of live ammunition, and takes in consideration relevant international human rights laws and standards as well as recommendations of the UN Special Rapporteurs who recently visited Papua New Guinea.”

The UN also stressed the importance of these inquiries being conducted in an independent, transparent and thorough manner, resulting in a just process.

“Recalling the statement issued by the UN Secretary-General last week, we call on the Government and all parties to work towards resolving the issues that have led to the month-long protest through a commitment to the rule of law and resolving this matter through dialogue without resorting to violence.”
