Tkatchenko connects water for Moresby South settlements

Residents of the Vanama, Kira Kira, Ranuguri areas of Moresby South will soon have access to running water services by Eda Ranu following an agreement with local MP, Justin Tkatchenko.

Tkatchenko, who is also Minister for Sports, APEC & National Events, today handed over cheques worth K549, 000 to Eda Ranu CEO, Henry Mokono, to begin the exercise. Tkatchenko said water connections would continue for other areas in his electorate as well.

“Once we get those projects done, we will then go to Sabama, Dodo Heights, Bundi Camp, and then Kaugeva,” he said. He further said “and the new projects we are looking at and hopefully we can start next year, is Gereka and also Dogura.”

Mokono when receiving the cheque said the exercise of connecting water was a costly exercise and such initiatives by the government was needed to ensure people have access to water.

However, he said the service was not free and that the onus was on the people receiving the project to consistently pay for water to keep the taps running.

“Each house is supposed to pay a certain amount on a monthly basis so that we maintain this supply on a regular basis.” NCD Governor, Powes Parkop, has also assisted in funding the project. A total of K1.2 million has been earmarked for water projects in the electorate.
