Three different investigations established to look into university activities

Three different investigations will be carried out by three different organisations to establish the facts into the confrontation yesterday that led to students sustaining injuries.

In updating the National Security Advisory Committee this morning, UPNG vice-chancellor Professor Albert Mellam said the university will conduct its own investigations into what happened.

The police will also conduct a separate investigation into this.

Police Commissioner Gari Baki said their investigations, apart from covering the shoot out and the nature of injuries received by students, will also look into where students have been getting their support from.

Baki said the police investigations will look into the conduct of the SRC president, Kenneth Rapa and the members of SRC.

Apart from these two investigations, the government will establish a big one to look into this matter.

While the terms of reference into this inquiry are yet to be established and persons appointed to carry out this inquiry, Lupari said investigations will look into some of the issues covered by the police inquiries.

This government-sanctioned inquiry will also look into the conduct of media houses in the country.

Lupari expressed disappointment at the way one international media organisation reported the situation on ground.

He said the report painted a bad image of PNG, prompting international airlines to cancel flights to Port Moresby.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Martin Dihm said the reports were “intentionally reckless” and the organisation will be either asked to apologise or their business status in the country will be looked at by the government.
