Symposium aims for health laws – Sirigoi

Maternal Health, Cancer, family planning sexual reproductive health and gender based violence are some key topics that will be discussed during the 51st Annual Medical Symposium in Port Moresby.

The Women Doctors Association (WDA) of Papua New Guinea will be hosting the event which will involve local and foreign doctors.

President Dr Lynda Sirigoi says the aim of this year’s Symposiums is for the government to introduce laws that will ensure vital services needed by women are provided.

She says the symposium is to advocate health issues among women to the highest level of decision making places.

“Although there have been health policies it is not effective and we feel a law would enable people to hold governments accountable for what they are supposed to be providing,” says Dr Sirigoi.

She says although recommendations by Medical symposiums have been implemented, it is still not sufficient.

Organizers are expecting 650 medical professionals to participate in the four day event themed: Advancing Women’s Health Through Innovation.

The concept behind the theme is: Innovative and Strategic Approaches to Strengthening Health Systems with a focus on Women’s Health.

Registration begin tomorrow at the Gateway Hotel while Caritas Technical Secondary School’s Multi-Purpose Hall will be the venue of the symposium.
