Students visit Lihir gold mine

Students from four schools on Lihir Island had a tour of the gold mine and plant site as part of the National Mining Safety Week (NMSW) activities hosted by Newcrest Lihir.

The schools were Olekowa, Samo, Palie Primary School and Lihir International Primary School.

The students had the opportunity to learn about the importance of observing road and vehicle safety signs.

Their tours started with awareness on the NMSW theme of ‘Vehicle and Road Safety’ followed by talks on the importance of Safety at the mine and plant site.

Other activities during the week-long observation promoting the NMSW theme included a Primary Schools Poster competition, a quiz, and song and slogan competition.

The weeklong observation ended yesterday with finals of the NMSW’s sports challenge.

Apart from talks on the importance of observing road and vehicle safety signs, they also listened to a talk on ‘Trupla Man, Trupla Meri’.

This is Lihir’s home grown anti-violence and behaviour change campaign that addresses the link between a safe home and a safe and productive workplace, school and community.

The campaign is an initiative of General Manager Craig Jetson that started last September and will be officially launched this year.
