SP Hunters set new records

The SP PNG Hunters have set several new records following their match against Souths Logan Magpies at the Sir John Guise Stadium on the weekend.

Hunters delivered on the night a 34-12 victory which gave the event a historical significance, setting a record of seven straight wins in their two-year existence.

PNG Rugby Football League interim chief executive officer Shane Morris said it could be a record in the largest crowd of 15, 000 that has ever watched an Intrust Super Cup competition proper game.

This was also the first time in a long time that a rugby league game in PNG has been played under lights.

When lights at the now demolished Lloyd Robson Oval were in operation, rugby league games were played there but the opportunity to stage night games has been absent for some time.

The response from the public was also overwhelming with the 15,000 tickets for both the grandstand (3,200) and outer stands (11,800) sold out by Friday, one day after they went on sale.

This was the first time tickets have been pre-sold and not at the gates as has been the practice for rugby league games in the past.
