Sorcery related deaths rife, says magistrate

Sorcery related deaths are common cases in the Highlands region.

Waigani Commital Court senior Magistrate Cosmos Bidar said many times sorcery retaliation killing are committed without actual proof.

He said many who die are innocent people with no proof of practicing sorcery.

He made these comments when arraigning a Lufa man who appeared in his court room for the first time over allegations he attempted to kill two other men at Garden Hills in July.

Gideon Guta, of Eastern Highlands Province was slapped with two counts of attempting to kill Ikine Kaute and Ben Kope on July 10 over suspicions they were responsible for the death of one of his daughters.

Prior to that, he sent his surviving daughter and another man to Abau district in the Central province to find a man who practices witchcraft to see who had killed his daughter.

Guta in the company of other man heated their weapons over the fire and boiled hot water before attacking Ikine and Kope at Garden hills on July 10.

The attack left the two elderly man inflicted with grievous wounds.

Bidar told Guta that his case is new at this state and police will need time to investigate further. He will return to court on Nov 11.
