Soldiers in student bashing arrested and charged

Thursday (30th of July) saw the handover of four soldiers to be formally arrested and charged in relation to the bashing up of 17 year old Jeremiah Yuni at a cultural show in Port Moresby last weekend.

The PNGDF Commander Gilbert Toropo in a media brief says that the four soldiers from Murray Barracks were detained by military police and handed over to their civilian counterparts to be dealt with.

Toropo says that the military police are continuing their investigations as more detainments are anticipated to be made.

The four soldiers were taken to the Boroko police station where CID officers took their statements and interviewed them about the incident.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Andy Bawa says that the four soldiers have all been charged with one count of attempted murder each.

Bawa tells Loop PNG that the four men mas of 6pm had been officially charged and refused bail.

They will be detained until mentioning which Bawa says will most likely be next week.

Meanwhile, the father of Jeremiah, Thomas Yuni tells Loop PNG that he is happy with the progress of the case but is also focusing on his son’s recovery.

Jeremiah as of late afternoon while still in a coma is said to be moving his fingers as his family members maintain a vigil by his bed side.
