Singer will appear as ‘Queen of the Fairies’

Singer Alyson Joyce (AJ) will be taking the stage of the Moresby Arts Theatre as Titania, the Queen of the Fairies, come October 29 through to November.

The singer scored this role for the 12 productions of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, a more contemporary twist to one of Shakespeare’s famous comedy written between 1590 and 1597.

Alyson’s participation in this production will be her very first theatre appearance.

She revealed to Business Plus, a weekly program on local TVWAN during an interview, that she has always been interested in theatre.

Alyson also told Loop PNG that the production has been modified to be relevant to the Papua New Guinea audience.

“Shakespeare is such an old play so we’re trying to make it relative to PNG,” she said referring to the music, the cast and the costume.

“There’ll be drumming, tribal beats, you’ll definitely see more PNG through the show.”

The cast for the MAT production of Dream is overwhelmingly dominated by established and aspiring PNG actors, musicians and performers. A major feature of the MAT production will be the adaptation of music to PNG sounds and instruments.

Excited, Alyson is urging Port Moresby residents to come along and experience something different.

“I think it’s important to embrace the mix of cultures.

“Also, it will be a very good opportunity if you’ve never been to a MAT show or if you’ve never even heard of it.

“And if you’re looking to involve in theatre, it’s even better, you can come and meet the cast, the director and find out how to get involved. It’s such a great way, especially for young people in PNG, to gain some self-confidence and express themselves through art and music and culture.”

Performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will start Saturday, October 29, and run over two weeks.

Tickets will begin selling next week Monday at Foodworld Waterfront and Boroko.
