Shreveport police: Officer shot, killed; manhunt ongoing

Police in northwest Louisiana have identified an officer who was killed and the suspect wanted in his slaying.

Shreveport Police Chief Willie Shaw says 24-year-old Thomas Lavalley was shot multiple times Wednesday night while answering a call about a suspicious person at a home in the city's Queensborough neighbourhood. Shaw says neighbors told the officer that the man inside the home was wanted. Shaw says the officer didn't know the man was armed, and he went inside and was shot.

Shaw said Thursday at a news conference that an arrest warrant has been issued for 27-year-old Grover Cannon, who was already wanted on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

Once arrested, Shaw says Cannon will be booked with first-degree murder.

Shaw says Lavalley was taken to University Health, where he died a short time later.

Police spokesman Bill Goodin says Shreveport police, Caddo Parish deputies, along with DeSoto Parish deputies, U.S. Marshals and the state police have joined the search for Cannon.
