School fields to be upgraded for FIFA U20 World Cup

Ten schools in Port Moresby will be chosen to have their playing fields upgraded for use during the FIFA U20 Womens World Cup from 13 November-3 December 2016.

The upgraded playing fields will be used for team training sites for the 16 countries that will be attending the World Cup.

One of the criteria in the hosting agreement and FIFA stadium guidelines for the tournament is to have 16 team training sites and a training site for referees.

Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko said the playing fields will be upgraded to the highest standard and will be international accredited.

Tkatchenko said this development will leave a lasting legacy where the schools will benefit from it in the future.

The selected schools will be announced at a later date once FIFA gives the final approval at the end of this month  for PNG to host the tournament.

PNG has met the criteria to host the tournament and has submitted the report for FIFA to give its final approval.
