School Captains Charter to help students

The inaugural NCD School Captains Charter was launched yesterday and is geared towards setting the bench for a wiser, better and healthier school-aged population.

The School Captain’s Charter will provide a platform for students to advocate against alcohol and drug abuse amongst their peers.

The forum was attended by school captains and principals from all NCD Secondary Schools.

Statistics gathered by NCDC under the Yumi Lukautim Moresby Project reveals that 95 percent of the juveniles at Bomana Juvenile Centre are there due to drugs and alcohol.

Acting Director General of NYDA Roby Duri said it requires the combined efforts of students, authorities and stakeholders to reduce alcohol and drug abuse as well as other youth related issues.

He added that creating an alcohol and drug-free society for the next generation is a vision that NYDA is working towards achieving.

The theme of the forum was empowering and building young people for a better tomorrow.

The expected outcome of this forum is to increase knowledge and understanding of youth issues and to strengthen the partnership with stakeholders.

Spiritual & Substance Abuse, Youth Experience in PNG, Mental Health & Social Change and Law on Drugs in PNG awareness were also carried out.
