Royals win POMRFL A grade men's premiership

Royals are the A grade men's 2015 champions of the Port Moresby Rugby Football League competition defeating Brothers 26-16 in the grand final this afternoon at the Murray Barracks oval.

Over a 1000 people flocked in to watch the 66th POMRFL grand final.

Brothers were on the score board after their first set of six when hooker Stanley Olo scooted out of dummy half to put himself into space to score.

Hobert Paul added the extras with ease to lead 6-0 after only the opening minutes.

Royals looked to speed to get points and knew to go to winger William Aquila who didn't let his team down scoring out wide.

But Brothers responded immediately through Olo who worked his magic again to go crashing over the line in the 30th minute.

There was a change in the scoreline two minutes out from half time when Royals center Supa George wrestled his way over the try line to slam the ball down.

John Simon Wamil booted the conversion through to leave his side trailing at 12-10  right on the half time siren.

The second half saw Royals dominate the opening 20 minutes and came close to scoring on a number of occasions.

But solid and disciplined defence by the Brothers allowed them to weather the storm.

Brothers captain led by example and took the pressure off his team with a solo effort to score on the wing.

A missed conversion left the score at 16-10.

But right fron the restart is where it all went horribly wrong for the Brothers after a knock on from the kick off.

Royals second rower, Lumba Ketowe scored off the very next play and then again minutes later to put his side in front at 20-16.

The win was sealed for Royals  two minutes from full time when  Wamil was put through a gap to score near the posts.

Wamil then converted his own try to add the icing on the cake right as the siren sounded.

Royals won K11, 000 in prize money while Brothers walked away with K6, 000 as runners up.
