Report: UOG staff must be trained on discipline enforcement

The University of Goroka (UOG) has been encouraged to carry out training for all its staff in relation to the enforcement of discipline.

This was one of the recommendations proposed by the UOG Investigation Committee that conducted an investigation into the conflict among students in June.

Committee chairman and UOG Council member, Lawrence Titimur, said by training the staff, they will take full responsibility when dealing with internal matters.

Titimur explained that when a member of the staff commits a breach of law, his immediate supervisor has a responsibility to carry out discipline on that particular officer.

“That’s the first line of action, and yet at UOG, we tend to rely on security too much.

“The university expects them to come in whenever a conflict arises and this must not be the case,” Titimur said.

Titimur also stressed that based on the report, the management is encouraged to re-examine the implementation of disciplinary rules and regulations within the student disciplinary statute.

The university management is also encouraged to consider the establishment of a specific section within the human resources department to look after discipline.

“We are also recommending that the management develops comprehensive policies and procedures for students to air their grievances in relation to all academic and disciplinary matters,” he said.

The recommendations were released in the report presented this week to the UOG Council to implement.
