Public Servants pay problems loom

More than 100,000 public Servants throughout the country are holding their breath as they do not know if they will be paid this week and the coming fortnight.

For the last two fortnights public servants in some government departments received their salaries very late.

A senior government official told LOOP PNG that in the last two fortnights they had to “run around to find money” to pay salaries.

He says they were told the Government account is in the red by K3 billion.

However,  Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has brushed aside this talk, saying: “The Government has adequate funds to meet its commitments and the payroll for public servants”.

LOOP PNG made two phone calls and sent a text message to Finance Minister James Marape however all attempts were unsuccessful.

Loop PNG also sent messages to the Governor of the Bank of PNG, Loi Bakani, but no response was received.

Other government departments have also raised concerns about the cuts made to their funds as the Government continues to face a cash flow problem.
