Polye warns of unrest

Opposition Leader Don Polye has warned against civil unrests when the proposed social media tribunal takes effect this Christmas.

Mr Polye expresses fear that ordinary citizens may rise in numbers in defence of the freedom of information and expression that media enjoys and this may trigger widespread unrest.

“It is draconian in nature so I am urging the Prime Minister and his communication minister to drop the proposal to set up the social media tribunal,” said Mr Polye.

He described the idea as the work of another Mugabe in the Pacific, saying suppression of the freedom of speech might stir up unrests in the country.

“It is a direct breach of the constitution.

“The Prime Minister has not only breached our Constitution time and time again but also other related laws,” a concerned Polye said.

He has expressed concerns that the would-be tribunal would erode the most envied vibrancy of media in the country.

He said the country is at the verge of disintegration in the wake of undermining of rule of law and the principles of democracy by those in power.

Polye said with the control of media, PNG would undergo its share of experiences which most African countries and others experienced.

“We should allow the people to express their views for the betterment of the country.

“Debate is good for development but we have a problem here as those in power do not want to come under the scrutiny of our people,” he said.

Mr Polye said the Government should accept criticisms to make informed decisions in the best interest of the people.

“We have a government which does not care about deferring views.

“I am urging the Prime Minister to make a new resolution to admit unpopular decisions which he has done for the country,” said Mr Polye.
