Polye: Referral of Chief Magistrate is ‘revenge’ by PM

Opposition Leader Don Polye says the letter from the Government Chief Secretary Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc to the Attorney General, referring Chief Magistrate Nerrie Eliakim for investigation is highly questionable.

Polye claims Zurenuoc was under pressure by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to act in order to protect himself.

Magistrate Eliakim had issued the warrant of arrest for Prime Minister Peter O’Neill on June 12th 2014 and in July she rejected an application to set aside the warrant.

Polye claims that the events from the banning of the lawyers, to the termination of two top investigators and now the referral of Magistrate Eliakim were not isolated and were all to do with protecting the Prime Minister.

He also says Attorney General Ano Pala is not the right person to deal with the allegations against the Chief Magistrate as he also has a warrant of arrest for him that is pending.

The warrant of arrest for Pala was also issued by Eliakim.

“It is a serious conflict of interest because he has a warrant of arrest out for him and he will be arrested soon,” Polye says.

Polye says these referrals; terminations and banning of lawyers were revenge taken by the Prime Minister on people who were doing their jobs fairly and rightfully under the constitution as mandated.
