Polye calls on O’Neill to step down

Opposition Leader Don Polye has again called on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to step down and be investigated.

Speaking at a media conference in Port Moresby, Polye said O’Neill is demeaning the Office of the Prime Minister by not enabling the court to determine whether he is innocent or guilty of charges against him.

“He uses every means – almost incessant pleading – before the court and hires very expensive lawyers at the expense of the state.

“Court hearings are an opportunity for those accused to show they are innocent. They are an opportunity for the prosecution to show the accused guilty.

“If O’Neill believes that he is honest and allegations are false, then he should welcome the opportunity for a court hearing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Polye applauded Justice Sir Bernard Sakora for stepping aside while being investigated in the Paul Paraka case.

Sir Bernard announced last week that he is voluntarily stepping aside from office as a judge of the National and Supreme Court pending criminal allegations against him.

Sir Bernard will not hear or sit in any cases at the National and Supreme Court pending the determination of this matter or the allegations of judicial corruption.
