The Opposition has described Prime Minister Peter O’Neill’s orders for the removal of Australian advisers as ‘self-serving and highly suspicious’.
“There is more to the orders to remove the advisers than meets the eye,’’ says Opposition Leader Don Polye.
“We understand the Prime Minister has a hidden motive for the removal of 33 advisers seconded to the public service,” he said.
He has taken a swipe at Mr O’Neill, describing it as a diplomatic blow to Australia and its adverse impacts which may affect the country.
“The advisers not only add values to the local public service with their expertise and experience but also help strengthen its capacity.
“We have observed that the Prime Minister has been on a crusade to suppress those who were either against him in policy and decision matters or provide professional advice to the government,” he said.
Polye said the termination did not surprise him as Mr O’Neill did not want to be coached on how to run the affairs of the country.
“The termination complements well with what he was up for.
“He wants to have a good time doing what he wants to do in the absence of anybody competent guiding him on what to do to save our country’s future,” he said.
Under the ‘Strongim Gavman Program,’ the advisers were attached to the Internal Revenue Commission, PNG Customs, Department of Justice and Attorney General, Office of the Auditor-General, Finance and Treasury Departments and the Ombudsman Commission.
