Policeman faces murder charge

A 53-year-old policeman has been arrested and charged in Madang over the weekend.

He was charged for the death of a youth from Chimbu, who was killed in front of the popular night club Pils Rapa at Redscar.

Provincial police commander Superintendent Jacob Singura said Senior Sergeant Franz Mongati was charged for the alleged offence.

Singura said the accused was in a vehicle approaching the alleged scene when he almost collided with a car. This angered the occupants of the other vehicle and one of them threw a can of beer, which hit the police van.

In retaliation, the policemen fired on the vehicle and its occupants.

A stray bullet from the four shots Mongati allegedly fired hit the victim on his abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from the injury.

Bystanders overpowered the officers and seized the firearm, which they later returned to police.

Singura said Mongati, who hails from Sissano, Aitape, Sandaun Province, served the force for more than 30 years and at the time of the incident, he was the acting rural commander.
