Police to investigate student confrontation

Police will be conducting their own investigation into the incident that took place at UPNG today.

Assistant Police Commissioner Crimes, Victor Isouve has been directed by Commissioner Gari Baki to visit the hospital and collect every detail about the injuries sustained by students.

Baki also said he will be giving directions to the NCD Metropolitan Superintendent and the NCD/Central Command to investigate the conduct of the UPNG Student Representative Council President.

“Now that this has happened, I have every reason to think that I am going to be giving direction for my MetSup and the Divisional Commander to investigate the conduct of the SRC president and any other student leaders as well.

“Once our investigations are completed, we will decide on what charges to lay.

“I want an independent inquiry to look into the incident that has happened today, also to establish if there is any influence whether politically, or from any other members of the community into the behaviour of the students,” Baki said.

“When you come out to the public domain, you come out of the university; you know very well that you’ve broken the law. There is no authority of the students to come out of the university campus area onto the public road.

“If we had sufficient man power we would have arrested every student there. The MetSup had told the students to go inside; no one listened to the police which resulted in this incident,” he added.

Commissioner Baki however refused to answer questions from the media on the rules of engagement, “Don’t ask me for the rule of engagement, this is intended for the police.”
