PNGOC ensuring benefits of life after sport

The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) is committed to ensuring that PNG’s elite athletes are not only successful on the field of play but also in life.

PNGOC is taking the lead in promoting excellence for life after sport for the country’s elite sports men and women.

It has established a program to cater for this through its long term partnership with the Institute of Business Studies (IBS).

It is through this partnership that the Athlete Excellence Programme (AEP) was established for elite athletes.

The programme aims to offer elite PNG athletes the opportunity to obtain educational qualifications through the IBS Diploma and Certificate courses.

These educational qualifications will contribute to their development as individuals and lead them into a successful professional career after their sporting endeavours.

So far athletes who have benefited from this scholarship opportunity are 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold medallist, Dika Toua and her sister, Thelma Toua, who is also a gold medallist in the Pacific Games.

Other scholarship recipients who are also Papua New Guinea elite athletes are Toua Udia and Lorraine Harry from weightlifting and Abel Redenut from football.

“The scholarship is very beneficial to us athletes and it gives us a second chance to prove that if we can excel in the sport we play we can also do our best in the academic world too.

“I’m thankful to PNGOC and IBS for the scholarship,” said Redenut.

The program is open to all elite PNG athletes and applications are handled by the PNGOC.
