PNG artists encouraged to find inspiration

Papua New Guinea artists have been encouraged to look at the greats in art history for inspiration when painting, drawing or designing.

English artist Dale Grimshaw, a PNG inspired mural painter in the United Kingdom, urges artists in PNG to look at the greats in art history and see what it is you can take and build on.

Grimshaw revealed, looking at contemporary painters for inspiration and ideas can be a bit of a distraction.

Keep pushing and keep working hard. Sometimes it's hard even knowing what it is that you want to say with your art let alone make original and saleable works.

I was constantly told not to be precious about my working approach at art school, just letting go and letting the paint fly can be a challenge, said Grimshaw.

He said there's a thin line between leaving parts of an artwork sketchy or unfinished because you recognise there's an energy and spontaneity about.
