Pepes improve ranking at Nations Cup

Papua New Guinea Pepes have improved their ranking from fifth to second place in the Mission Foods Nations Cup 2015 in Singapore.

Our girls took out silver after losing to Northern Ireland 52-41 to finish second in the tournament.

From the beginning, 12th world ranked Northern Ireland paired their top scorers Jenna and Kyla Bowman who proved effective as they raced to take the first quarter 16-4.

Pepes, 16th world ranked, piled on the pressure in the second quarter as goal shooter Tiata Baldwin paired up with captain Lua Rikis to tip the second quarter in PNG’s favour, nicking it 15-14.

The third quarter of the match proved to be more of the same from Pepes as they managed a five-goal run midway through the quarter to put the Northern Ireland defence under pressure.

Undeterred, Northern Ireland stuck to their game plan and managed to maintain a 7-point lead at the end of the quarter by scoring nine goals.

In the final quarter, Northern Ireland captain Gemma Gibney led from the back to win the Northern Irish their second Nations Cup in six years.

A total of six teams took part in the tournament, namely China, Botswana, home teams Singapore Invitational and Singapore, Northern Ireland and PNG.
