Pato disputes refugee’s claim

Papua New Guinea has a good refugee case management system in place to screen and settle genuine refugees.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Rimbink Pato said this following local and international media reports about PNG’s support and protection for refugees.

“The Government is proud to offer social, legal, humanitarian, and community support to all refugees in the country,” Pato said.

“We are taking best possible measures to ensure refugees become self-sufficient as quickly as possible.

“Depending on their needs, this may include language and culture orientation training, health insurance and temporary accommodation.”

The settlement of refugees is funded by the Australian Government.

Meanwhile, Pato said claims by Iranian refugee; Loghman Sarwari of being homeless in PNG is not true.

“Loghman was provided with accommodation by his employer but he decided to move out at his own will.

“After leaving, he approached the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lae where he is currently residing,” Pato said.

Currently six people have been given refugee status.
