Participants suggest how to better industry

The passion for PNG’s fashion industry is now stronger than ever before.

Ending the three-day workshop organised by PNG Fashion Week today, participants put together a few recommendations which they hope will attract assistance, particularly from the government.

The support so far has been overwhelming, according to director Janet Sios, but she says challenges still remain, especially in terms of funding and marketing platform.

Identifying these challenges, a participant, Erigere Singin, presented the concerns, suggestions and points raised.

Singin highlighted private-public-partnership, which she says will greatly benefit the industry.

“We need this arrangement to get all necessary stakeholders to come hand in hand with us because each has their own systems in place.”

She also made a call to reactivate the women’s textile industry in the region, by opening a textile training centre.

Touching on sewing machines, she stressed on the need for special training on machine repairs, which can be a business on its own.

Other concerns and suggestions included copyright, tax-free incentives and a bilum school.

Going forward, they plan to create a community with the aim to mentor designers and any interested person.

Marianna Ellingson, director – Office of Tourism Arts and Culture, who was present during the presentation, gave assurance of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture support.

She also stressed on dedication and commitment on the part of those in the industry.

“When you create a market, your supply has to be there,” she said.
