Opposition moves vote of no-confidence

A motion for a vote of no-confidence against the National Government was filed today by the Opposition.

The motion is sponsored by the Deputy Opposition Leader Sam Basil, and seconded by the country’s first Prime Minister Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.

“We the Opposition confirmed that the motion was successfully delivered to the office of the (Parliament) Speaker, and received by the Deputy Speaker (Aide Ganasi).

In a news conference after the first sitting of Parliament for 2016, Basil said the motion was accepted by the Speakers office.

“The motion was stamped, signed and sealed, this is the third time, we have tried two attempts before and I believe all the flaws have been minimised, and the motion is flaw less, we look forward to the Prime Minister to test the numbers on the floor of Parliament.”

The motion of no-confidence will be deliberated by the Parliament Privileges Committee (PPC) on Wednesday.

When the notice gets approved by PPC, the Speaker will then advise Parliament of the motion of no-confidence the next day.

And Parliament will be given seven days to sit and vote on the motion.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Don Poyle said he has the support to topple the government.

“We have strong support from middle and also government benches.”

He also has withdrawn his court proceeding filed last year after the second vote of no- confidence was disqualified by PPC.
