Opposition challenges media to be fair

The media in Papua New Guinea has been challenged to be fair in its reporting.

Opposition Leader Don Poyle threw the challenge in a media conference yesterday in Port Moresby.

“Some media houses are deliberately misconceiving and twisting facts,” Polye said.

“I advise media to seek advice from their lawyers to verify matters of national importance so they may report the right thing.

“They have the freedom of speech and must report the truth which is verified.”

Poyle’s comments followed reports in a daily newspaper last week regarding the signature of Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare who seconded the vote of no-confidence filed by the Opposition.

Deputy Opposition Leader Sam Basil also challenged the media to continue to report facts without fear or favour.

“When we go into the Government we will give you all the freedom.

“Continue the fights, we cannot do it on the floor of Parliament, students cannot do it out there, unions cannot do it out there, our last hope is the media to defend our Constitution and our people.”
