Open Parliament Project making progress

The Open Parliament Project (OPP) is making significant progress in a concept that provides a platform for the public to communicate with their members of parliament and vice versa.

Speaking at the OPP media information workshop, Jack Bagita fromTransparency International PNG (TIPNG) said 19, 627 people this year had used SMS to try to get information about their members of parliament.

He said 9, 700 had successfully got information while 9198 had failed as a result of incorrect spelling and lack of knowledge on how to use SMS.

He added another 723 callback requests had been received from rural areas with people asking about things like District Services Improvement Project (DSIP) and contact details of members of parliament.

“On the OPP website, we have reached a milestone with 37, 925 users with 173 countries visiting the website,” said Bagita.

He said there were still challenges that lay ahead with website development and providing regular updates.

The OPP was launched by TIPNG and the Speaker of Parliament, Theo Zurenuoc last year in June.
