OLIPAC Laws must be amended

The Electoral Commission and Office of the Registrar of Political Parties have been commended for their work to improve the electoral system and development of a political culture in the country.

Nelson Duwabane, the President of Country Party  said, “with the 2017 Elections some months away, we want the Government to revise the OLIPPAC and the Organic Law on National and LLG Elections to ensure we have smooth elections.

“The Provincial Reforms have disabled good debate in the Provincial Assembly and the LLG. The governor and president are the chairman and speaker and there’s no Opposition to scrutinize the provincial and Local Level Governments.

“The ideology and policies of the political party must be implemented. To strengthen political party and democracy, requires the reforms to permeate all levels of government.

“A MP cannot vote against agriculture reforms in National Parliament and vote for it in the Provincial Assembly.

“People should vote for political party ideologies and policies. This will enable people to seriously consider candidates along party lines and allow political parties to grow as a mass based system as envisaged to develop a political culture,” Duwabane said.
