O’Neill welcomes Polye back

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has welcome Kandep MP Don Pomb Polye after the court reinstated him as the member elect.

O’Neill during a radio talk-back in Port Moresby said the Government needed experienced politician like Polye to give advice and bring development into the country.

He said he would enjoy working with Polye as they have no personnel issues or whatsoever.

“He’s an experienced politician who is serving his third term as an MP and we need such people when debating on policies and issues in the floor of parliament.”

Polye’s 2012 election victory was set aside after the national court ruled in favour of his runner up and petitioner Alfred Manaseh.

The court on May 2 ruled that five ballot boxes in Polye's Kandep electorate were not properly counted by the Electoral Commission.

However, the Supreme Court on Tuesday reinstated Polye as the Member for Parliament for Kandep Open Electorate.

The Supreme Court stayed an earlier decision by the National Court.

In a news conference on Tuessday, Polye described the Court decision as a “rugby league match.”

"I have been sent to the blood-bin and I am back."

The former opposition leader said he had appealed the earlier decision and the matter will be heard soon.

The Court decision now means that Polye will remain as a Member for Parliament while a Supreme Court bench will hear his application.
