O’Neill slams Polye’s claims on ABG funds

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has described Opposition Leader Don Pomb Polye’s claims on the Western Pacific University funds from the Government of China as “rubbish”.

In a conference this afternoon, Polye called on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to appropriate K70 million funding to the Autonomous Bougainville Government.

Polye claimed that the money was given by the People’s Republic of China to build a technical institution in the autonomous region.

However, he claimed that O’Neill diverted the funds to his own electorate in Ialibu-Pangia to build the new Western Pacific University.

”If the Prime Minister has some moral concerns and is remorseful for what he has done, he must appropriate separately K70-80 million to the people of Bougainville.

“That’s neither his money, nor his government’s money but the money was given to the people of Bougainville by the Government of the People’s Republic of China as a grant.”

He said O’Neill must make up for these funds in the Government Appropriation Bill and allocate separately K70 million for the establishment of the technical institution in Bougainville.

However, O’Neill responded to Loop PNG via mobile and said: “that is rubbish and there are no funds committed either to Bougainville or Western Pacific University by China to date”.
