North Mendi primary celebrates teachers’ day

October 5 is the United Nations commemorated World Teachers’ Day, which is not a public holiday, but observed and celebrated worldwide.

The Day is accompanied with a host of activities by schools and other learning institutions and of course, as a member of the global community, Papua New Guinea participates in the celebrations with schools nationwide organising their own activities.

North Mendi Primary School in Mendi, the provincial capital of Southern Highlands, was no different.

The school, however, observed the day on Friday (Oct 7) to prevent the disruption of learning activities, as seen in these pictures.

UNESCO proclaimed 5 October to be World Teachers’ Day in 1994, celebrating the great step made for teachers on 5 October 1966, when a special intergovernmental conference in Paris adopted the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, in cooperation with the ILO.

Teachers are considered the background of a nation therefore the event is set aside to acknolwledge their efforts.
