No arrest yet for the theft of Kandep Open ballot boxes

Police investigation into the theft of the two unexhausted ballot boxes in the Kandep by-election recount of the 2012 votes is still on-going says Enga PPC George Kakas.

The Provincial Police Commander is adamant to uncover the theft which happened inside the police station yard last month.

The incident happened in October when unknown persons broke open the container containing the ballot boxes and stole only the two boxes that were not exhausted during the Court ordered recount, which ended two weeks earlier.

At a closed door meeting on October 18, between the PNG Electoral Commission and lawyers representing sitting MP and Opposition Leader Don Poyle, and successful election petitioner Alfred Manase, it was resolved that a second recount will be taken to correct errors in the judicial recount

The break and enter theft happened after the decision was reached.
