New police chief promises post-holidays action

Newly appointed Assistant Commissioner of Police for Momase Command, Peter Guinness has assured that the new police modernization program will be deliberated on after the Christmas and New Year operations.

Speaking during the hand-over-takeover ceremony in Lae on Friday ACP Guinness said the recently announced modernization program offered an opportunity to take policing to the next level and his command would take heed of what the new program/structure had in store.

Guinness formally signed the documents and took over the Momase command from incumbent ACP Nema Mondiai, who was transferred to the newly created Highlands Eastern Region which covers Western Highlands, Jiwaka and Simbu provinces.

The Momase command now covers Morobe, Madang and Eastern Highlands while East and West Sepik are part of the newly created Border Command.

“We will see the Christmas and New Year operations go and then I will call the PPCs to gather in Lae to look at strategies to address law and order suited for the modernization program,” Guinness said.

He said that law and order did not belong to the police force only but rather it was a community issue for everyone to work on  together.

“In my capacity, I will be calling on the law and justice sector and the community at large to support the police so that we work together to find better ways to address law and order issues that are affecting the provinces ,” Guinness said.

He said every development brought its own law and order issues thus policing efforts should be on a par with that.

Guinness thanked Mondiai for departing on a good note and vowed to carry on but with emphasis on the new direction under the restructure.

He said part of the Momase Command’s strategies will be on increasing manpower with improved accommodation and other infrastructure.

Guinness called on the community at large under his command to work with police to contain crime.

He will be based in Lae.
