New Koki Fish Market open for business!

The much-anticipated Koki Fish Market in the National Capital District is now officially open for business.

The market, located a couple of hundred metres from the main Koki Market and Wanigela Village, was officially launched today by NCD Governor Powes Parkop.

The K10 million market is a public-private partnership between NCDC, National Fisheries Authority, National Forest Products and Puma Energy.

It features ample parking space, a jetty and 90 stalls, toilet facilities, an ice-making machine, four floating pontoons and fuel vending facilities.

Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko said during the launch that the market provides business opportunities for the fishermen from nearby villages to raise their living standards, as well as ensure that they can make a livelihood in the capital city.

Tkatchenko highlighted that the market will benefit the people from coastal villages, including Fisherman Island, Vabukori, Pari, Taurama, Joyce Bay, Hanuabada, Tatana and Porebada.

He added that the challenge would be to keep it clean and hygienic and they’re determined to make sure that it is kept clean at all times.

Governor Parkop thanked Puma Energy and National Fisheries Authority for the investment that will go a long way in benefiting the local fishermen and city residents.

Puma Energy country manager Jim Collins said they’re pleased to have partnered with NCDC to deliver an asset that will support the fishing communities and the city over many years to come.

The fish market will be open from 8am to 8pm daily and is managed by the Moresby South Market Management Board.
