NEC: Schools not to collect project fees

Schools throughout the country are instructed not to collect any project fees from now onward.

Acting Secretary for Education Dr Uke Kombra officially issued the instruction today as per the National Executive Council’s (NEC) decision.

Head teachers who do not comply with this decision will face disciplinary action.

NEC has made the decision to endorse the new single integrated Tuition Free Fee Policy in principal but the section on project fees imposed on parents was not approved after it was abused by schools.

As stated in the policy, schools were only supposed to collect project fees at a maximum of K50 for elementary, K100 for primary, K200 for high schools and K250 for secondary schools.

Schools are instructed to reimburse the project fees already paid by parents this year and schools must not make project fees as a condition for enrolment.

“Every student must enroll as the government is paying the Tuition Free Fee (TFF) so there should be no condition for student enrolment,” said Kombra.

The decision applies to all institutions under the national education systems and those that benefit from TTF policy.

“The government is committed to the TFF policy and over the last four years has paid the full fees that have been appropriated.

“The schools should carefully use the funds that are given so that projects are completed,” he said.
