NCD police boss to change perception

National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi is adamant to change public perception of his officers, and is asking for local parliamentarians to support his pro-active plan for 2016.

NCD Police boss was with his officers patrolling the streets of Port Moresby in their New Year operations last night.

Turi told the media that, minimising public complaint on police brutality and making the police presence felt by the city residents are is his top priority for 2016.

“First thing is to cut down police brutality by the first quarter of the year, and will concentrate on reducing the crime rate and stolen motor vehicles in the city.

“It’s a small city but we need political support from our four NCD MPs (three Open members and the Governor), like logistics and new communication technology because we have  lead-up meetings for the APEC this year, the 2017 National Elections and 2018 APEC.”

Turi added that restructuring police operation in the nation’s capital will happened this year awaiting the Department of National Planning approval.

The new structure, when officially cleared will see Badili station looking after the Moresby South electorate, Gordon station Moresby North East and Waigani Moresby North West.

“This will modernise police force and bring it closer to the community,” Turi said.

“The old structure with everything at Boroko,  including traffic and CID is located there so with any major incidents you have to go to Boroko.”

Turi’s  pro-active 2016 plan may look simple but with good support from all NDC MPs and the Police Minister Robert Atiyafa, NCD could well be on its way to being a well-policed and safer city in the country and the region.
