Mt Diamond student surrenders over rape aĺlegation

Police in NCD have arrested one of the suspects allegedly involved in the rape of a student at Mt Diamond Secondary School.

NCD’s Superintendent Operations Silas Wayagure says the suspect had surrendered to a policeman at the Macgregor Barracks on Friday last week.

He has been charged with one count of sexual penetration and is now in the police cells awaiting a court appearance.

Wayagure says the suspect is aged between 18 to 19 years of age and will be tried in court as an adult.

He says the suspect's parents were ashamed of their son’s action and decided it would be better for him to turn himself in.

“The suspect will remain until a recorded interview will be done to prepare the suspect's file for court,” Wayagure says.

The rape incident occurred on June 16 after a group of students, three female and three male went drinking outside of the school’s premises.

A video of this incident was posted on Facebook and shared multiple times by Papua New Guinean youths especially until it caught the attention of many more that cared enough to demand its removal on Facebook and report it to police
