Morobe monitors El Nino impact

Morobe Governor Kasiga Kelly Naru has warned his people to be mindful of El Nino.

There are already signs and symptoms of extreme weather in some parts of the country and Morobe Province will also be affected.

He said if what they see and hear is true then they are heading for tough times ahead.

"I want all the people of Morobe to be mindful of the extreme weather. Some parts of the country have been affected and they will also be affected.”

"We have to be considerate in the water we take and food we consume," Naru warned.

He said what they might be experiencing will be the same as 1997 when there was a severe drought in most parts of the country.

The Provincial Disaster and Emergency Services is aware of the dry spell in some parts of Morobe.

Director Charlie Masankec said the disaster office is aware and monitoring the situation closely with the National Disaster Centre in Port Moresby setting up a team to collect updated information from the provinces on the situation.

"Right now we are collecting information and feeding them by monitoring the situation very closely throughout the province," he said.

The National Disaster Centre will provide assistance from the information supplied.

Reports received by PNGLOOP said the dry spell has hit the Sialum LLG area in the Tewai/Siassi district.
