Mobile SIM card registration and cyber-crime policies to be released this Friday

The certificate of compliance for mobile phone SIM card registration and cyber-crime policies will be launched on Friday by regulator, the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) in Port Moresby.

“We are inviting all media people and stakeholders to come and make comments on Friday to launch the SIM card registration and cybercrime policy before it goes before Parliament,” said Jimmy Miringtoro, minister for information and communication.

When responding to questions by Loop PNG he said the delay in having the two policies go before Parliament was because of the delay in appointment of a permanent chief executive officer and the other board members.

“We are looking at new laws and NICTA must be in a position to check this law, and it is very important that the Board and CEO must be in place so these laws comply with international standards.”

“The delay in putting a CEO and Board members is because of the (appointment) process.”

But there is light at the end tunnel with the official announcement of incumbent Charles Punaha as NICTA CEO this morning.

Punaha will serve for the next five years.

Miringtoro said “the appointment was transparent because it was advertised.”

Miringtoro is adamant the two policies which he will sponsor will be tabled in Parliament next year.
