Minister to meet UOG staff and students amid crisis

Higher Education Science and Technology Minister Malakai Tabar and officials will travel to Goroka tomorrow to meet staff and students of the University of Goroka.

This comes after a student protest this week resulted in students clashing with Goroka police.

Tabar says the aim of the visit is to find out exactly what the issues are and to establish a way to resolve the conflict.

“I will also meet with the police and the Eastern Highlands Governor to hear their side of the story and at the end of the day we want the students to return to classes,” he said to LOOP News.

Tabar is expected to hold a media conference when he returns to Port Moresby on Tuesday.

He is also expected to furnish a report and recommendations to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.

Meanwhile the Opposition today called on the Department of Higher Education Science and Technology to find a solution to the issues at hand.
