At least 168 medical volunteers, doctors, nurses and other heath workers are in place and ready to provide support at the venues for the duration of the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games.
The supervisor of the Pacific Games Medical Services, Nona Diya, said medical services will be provided for athletes, technical officials, VIPs, spectators, anti-doping control and local clinics.
Diya said the Games Organising Committee (GOC) has enlisted the help of the medical personnel because not all teams travelled with their own staff.
“The athletes are our priority for specialist health care for injuries sustained on the field of play,” Diya said.
“The Emergency Medical Services team will provide support for the athletes and technical officials. Medical services will also be provided for the spectators. The GOC has engaged St John’s to provide this service.”
Athletes and others needing medical attention will be examined by the team at the venue with the more serious cases being referred to the Port Moresby General Hospital and the less serious cases to a local clinic.
Diya said the clinic at the University of Papua New Guinea (UNPG) will be the official one at Port Moresby 2015. “The UPNG clinic has been refurbished to provide this vital service,” Diya said.
Medical support units will be located at the BSP Arena, BSP Stadium, Bisini Grounds, Caritas Technical Secondary School and at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium.....PACNEWS
