Man wounded, buildings burnt over sorcery claims in NCD

A man was rushed to the hospital with a knife wound early this morning while a couple of bush material buildings at ATS, outside Port Moresby, were burnt down.

All these happened due to allegations of sorcery between clansmen from Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.

NCD metropolitan superintendent, Commander Ben Turi, told Loop PNG that the incident was a spillover from last Thursday.

“A young man climbed a tree during a bird hunting trip last week, when he fell to his death,” Turi said.

“The Gorokas from Garden Hills claimed that it was the work of sanguma. They then went to ATS and burnt the other group of Marawakas’ haus kuks.”

During the incident, a man was cut on his head with a bush knife. He is currently nursing his wound in the hospital.

“We could not make any arrests because they came as a mob. The residents have no idea as to who cut the man.

“But they will solve it the Goroka way next Sunday, in the presence of police,” states Turi.

“The belief in sorcery should not be brought into the city,” the commander tells Loop PNG.

“This primitive way of thinking must cease. A death is a death, where we must prove its cause.”

Apart from Sunday’s events, no major crimes were reported in NCD during the weekend.
