Man shot by police over betelnut, critical

The Wanigela man that was shot by police in a betelnut raid at Koki yesterday remains in a critical condition at the Port Moresby General Hospital today.

Relatives to the injured say he was rushed to Pacific International Hospital but was later referred to POMGEN.

Eyewitnesses said police came in two marked vehicles to intercept people smuggling betelnut into the market.

The crowd ran in all directions when they saw police.

Eyewitnesses say police fired shots and threw tear gas canisters into house when traders ran into houses with their betelnut bags.

More to come...
