Madang town centre without proper drainage

Madang town dubbed the ‘beautiful town’ in the South Pacific does not have a proper drainage system thus during heavy rains there are huge pools of water around the town centre making the place an eyesore。

Moreover, new developments, including buildings are currently being constructed within the Madang town centre, however, there is imminent risk of them flooding the town during heavy rains because of no proper storm drainage system.

General Manager of Maigari Limited, Russel Melluck pointed out that the town does not have a proper storm drain system where all the water during heavy rains can go through to eventually reach the ocean.

Melluck said this was evident during recent heavy rains which saw big pools of water between the National Development Bank building and the Air Niugini office.

“Who is going to build the proper drains and gutters especially in the area between Tam Yan and National Development Bank, because these areas have  big pool of water during heavy rains,” Melluck said.

He said recent heavy rains in Madang had caused many areas within the town being flooded because there is no proper drainage system in place.

He further added that the old gutters built during the colonial era is not outdated because of many new buildings coming up and even new roads being built thus the gutters could not stand the amount of water over-flowing.
