Lutherans gather in Finschhafen for national synod

The Lutheran faithful in Papua New Guinea will congregate for a week-long fellowship in Finschhafen next week when the 30th National Synod gets underway.

The biennial event begins tomorrow (Sunday January 10th) at Heldsbach with a grand opening to be witnessed by Government and church leaders, as well as church partners and friends from around the country and overseas.

Finschhafen is where the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELCPNG) established its roots in the country some 130 years ago.

The Synod will be attended by thousands of ELCPNG faithfuls from the church's 17 districts (regional settings throughout PNG). Next week's event will be hosted by the Kote district, one of the biggest and large population districts in the country.

Lae city was flooded by Lutheran followers this week as they travelled in from all corners of the country.

The last Synod was held on Karkar Island, Madang province, in 2014. Twenty percent of PNG's total population are Lutherans.
