Local designers inspired by PNG culture

Our diverseĺ culture and tradition is what motivates and inspires many local professional fashion designers.

Showcasing her designs at the recent Miss Pacific Islands Pageant PNG Project Runway, fashion designer Anna Amos says her motive behind her fashion label is modernising the traditional designs.

“I always use cultural elements to integrate into what modern PNG girls like to wear and hope one day my designs can be worn by women overseas,” said Amos.

Designer Genevieve Igara from Wantok Clothing believes there’s a bright future for PNG designers in the fashion industry.

“We come from a rich background of culture and heritage so we’d like to see fashion shows and events promoted in PNG and the region,” Igara said.

Another designer Luana Temu of Ui-Tiki Fashion said this is an avenue where we are able to express ourselves.

“Under normal circumstances unfortunately in this country, sometimes women cannot do that, that’s where we drew our inspiration from for our fashion label.

“We want young girls to step up and be able to express themselves through fashion so they can create something by drawing inspiration from our designs based on culture and tradition,” she said.

The three designers showcased their style and creativity at the Project Runway in Port Moresby yesterday.
